Why choose polypropylene for covering furniture components
Polypropylene, or polypropene (PP), is a thermoplastic polymer derived from crude oil. It is highly resistant to stress, abrasion and chemical agents. It has strong insulating properties and does not absorb unpleasant odours. It can be recycled easily, helping reduce environmental impact. Although it is a synthetic raw material, its production does not require particularly polluting processes or large quantities of water and chemicals.
Some of polypropylene's main characteristics include:
- Mechanical resistance (impact and stress resistance for a robust, lasting material)
- Light weight (low density)
- Chemical resistance
- Resistance to high temperatures
- Resistance to weathering (sunlight, humidity and oxidation)
- Thermal and electrical insulation
- Ease of processing (extrusion, injection moulding and thermoforming)
- Recyclability (it can be melted and reused)
Its adaptability in production and environmental terms makes polypropylene a practical choice for a wide range of products. These same qualities make it suitable for plastic films used to cover furniture components.
